Earl Grey Teas
Earl Grey Tea, with the flavour of Bergamot, has been one of the unbreakable bastions of English taste for a very long time. However, what people actually want from an Earl Grey isn't as bastion-esque as one might think. Our real opinions panellists were faced with a wide range of different Earl Grey teas and comprehensively failed to agree on which was best.
The comments from the more English of the group ranged from "It needs more Bergamot" through "I'm not so sure about the use of Rose Petals" to "It's bland as...". The optimists were less help, suggesting that "They're all lovely, I don't think I can choose one", and "I liked the flowery ones, and I'm a big fan of the strong Bergamot in that one.", .
It seems there's no pleasing everyone with a definitive Earl Grey: so we decided to stock seven - five black (of which one is decaf.), one green, and one Rooibos. And here they are:
Black Earl Grey Teas
Black tea with bergamot flavour.
We chose this Earl Grey as our standard because the strong bergamot flavour lends it a fantastically refreshing quality - one of our most popular teas.
Black tea with cornflowers and bergamot flavour.
A slightly less vibrant flavour than our Classic Earl Grey, but the cornflowers give an openness to the flavour and they're pretty too - a close second in popularity to our Classic Earl Grey.
Black tea blended with rose flowers and bergamot flavour.
Quite apart from looking dainty before brewing, this tea has a wonderfully calming rose flavour. It's probably not a tea to drink whilst getting excited about the rugby on telly, but a good one to accompany you through that steamy novel on a Sunday afternoon: a bestseller.
All the fun of an Earl Grey with none of the caffeine.
Smoky black tea with bergamot flavour
The fusion of Earl Grey and green tea, beautifully rounded off with the scent of rose petals - this subtle sencha appeals to all.
China Sencha with rose petals and natural flavour.
The fusion of Earl Grey and green tea, beautifully rounded off with the scent of rose petals - this subtle sencha appeals to all.
Rooibos and bergamot flavour
A naturally caffeine-free version of the English classic. The bergamot combines well with the sweet flavour of the Rooibos. Great with milk.
